More marching orders for the recently identified apostles.

They were to do what Jesus did in this earliest part of His ministry. They were to heal, to raise from the dead, to cleanse the unclean, to cast out demons.

But their activity was to be directed to the basic message of Jesus’ preaching: the kingdom is at hand. Getting that message across was the most important part of their mission.

They were to proceed without pretensions: no extra money, no extra clothes, minimal travel gear. They were to accept the accommodations that people offered them, not seeking special comforts. The delivery of the message of the kingdom was what counted.

All of us are messengers of the kingdom. How devoted are we to that mission?

Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk, the eighth ordinary of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, is a nationally prominent churchman, educator and author of popular books about Catholic themes.

He was born in Dayton, Ohio, on August 12, 1934. After studies at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome, he was ordained a priest on December 20, 1959. His ordination as bishop in 1974 and installation as archbishop in 1982 also were on December 20.

In addition to a doctorate in sacred theology from Pontifical Urban University (1961), Archbishop Pilarczyk holds an M.A. in classics from Xavier University in Cincinnati (1965) and a Ph.D. in classics from the University of Cincinnati (1969).

Archbishop Pilarczyk has written more than a dozen popular books and many pamphlets and articles. His best selling book is Twelve Tough Issues – And More. His most recent are When God Speaks and Live Letters.
