“We know this Jesus. He’s just like us. How can He ever claim to be a prophet? Who does He think He is?” the villagers ask.

That’s an important question: who does He think He is? Just as significant is the question: who do we think He is? Every human being has to answer that question. It’s the most important question of our lives.

Is Jesus a prophet, a philosopher, a charlatan, an imposter? There are lots of ways to interpret Jesus. Each of us has to come to some sort of conclusion about Him.

The Church teaches us that Jesus is savior, redeemer, the Son of God, the only source of sense and meaning for our human life.

What do I make of Jesus?

Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk, the eighth ordinary of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, is a nationally prominent churchman, educator and author of popular books about Catholic themes.

He was born in Dayton, Ohio, on August 12, 1934. After studies at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome, he was ordained a priest on December 20, 1959. His ordination as bishop in 1974 and installation as archbishop in 1982 also were on December 20.

In addition to a doctorate in sacred theology from Pontifical Urban University (1961), Archbishop Pilarczyk holds an M.A. in classics from Xavier University in Cincinnati (1965) and a Ph.D. in classics from the University of Cincinnati (1969).

Archbishop Pilarczyk has written more than a dozen popular books and many pamphlets and articles. His best selling book is Twelve Tough Issues – And More. His most recent are When God Speaks and Live Letters.
