The point of today’s parables is not that we can “buy” salvation with our own efforts. Rather it’s that whatever expenditure of effort is called for from us in pursuing the kingdom--self-discipline, sacrifice, patience--is small effort in comparison with what God wants to give us. No matter what the “price,” the kingdom is always a bargain.
We sometimes think that God is making things difficult for us. Pursuing the kingdom seems hard. But maybe that’s because we underestimate the preciousness of what we are pursuing. God doesn’t deal in shabby goods. Only the best is good enough for God to offer to those He loves. And the pursuit of the best requires effort.
What am I willing to expend for the kingdom?
