Jn. 11:19-27

We know very little about Martha. She entertained Jesus a few times in her home. On one occasion Jesus found it necessary to remind her that listening to Him was better than tending to the fine points of hospitality.

We also know that, when her brother, Lazarus died, Martha turned to Jesus for comfort. He responded to her confidence in Him by assuring her that He would bring Lazarus back to life.

Martha knew Jesus well. She loved Him as a good friend. She had faith in what He taught and in what He could do.

Martha provides an example for our relationship with Jesus. Jesus calls us to know Him, to be friends with Him, to have faith in Him.

How have I responded?

Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk, the eighth ordinary of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, is a nationally prominent churchman, educator and author of popular books about Catholic themes.

He was born in Dayton, Ohio, on August 12, 1934. After studies at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome, he was ordained a priest on December 20, 1959. His ordination as bishop in 1974 and installation as archbishop in 1982 also were on December 20.

In addition to a doctorate in sacred theology from Pontifical Urban University (1961), Archbishop Pilarczyk holds an M.A. in classics from Xavier University in Cincinnati (1965) and a Ph.D. in classics from the University of Cincinnati (1969).

Archbishop Pilarczyk has written more than a dozen popular books and many pamphlets and articles. His best selling book is Twelve Tough Issues – And More. His most recent are When God Speaks and Live Letters.
